about LIVE AID day 1 - London full concert: Live Aid was one of the greatest rock shows of all time with maybe only Woodstock surpassing it.
It was fully organized by Bob Geldof, singer from the Boomtown rats.
LIVE AID was broadcasted by satellites and it was available on 95% of TVs in the world.
It was a musical and technical breakthrough for the time.
The concerts were held in two places on the same day - in Philadelphia (US) and London (UK).
LIVE AID was organized as a charity foundation for starving children in Africa, especially Ethiopia.
As all charity events, this one was heavily criticized for years to come - it is disputable how much it actually helped to solve the problem as there were reports of big amounts of money not being delivered to the needy ones, but were tucked into the pockets of the corrupt officials.
The debate of the charity event could be further extended as many theorists pointed out that money influx in Africa does not create solutions, perhaps only temporary, but in the long run situations are getting even worse.
If we look away from these issues, we have one of the biggest rock gigs in history of music. Virtually "everybody who's anybody" showed up for the show.
It should also be pointed out that London and Philadelphia were not the only concerts that were held at the time (but were indeed the biggest), there were also concerts in Germany, Australia, Netherlands. Even two countries from the socialist bloc participated in the event - USSR and Yugoslavia.
USSR had only the band "Autograph" playing, while Yugoslavia created a much larger organization called "YU rock mission" which consisted of all popular musicians from the country.
Some of the well known highlights of the Live Aid concerts include: Mick Jagger and Tina Turner duet, U2 emotional performance of the song Bas and Queen's performance which some fans dubbed "20 minutes when Queen ruled the world".
Last song from London was Paul McCartney's "Let it be", his microphone had technical problems for about two minutes into the song.
Also Who's song "My Generation" was cut off due to technical difficulties in the satellite transmission, notable detail is that the transmission cuts of just as the line "Why don't you all fade away" comes along.
