about Everybody Hurts: Let’s face it – when majority of people hear REM they instantly get the "everybody hurts" melody ringing in their heads. It’s one of those songs that every casual listener knows, but I bet some have no clue that it is performed by REM.
Guitarist Peter Buck said once that teenagers will instantly relate to it. In fact the lyrics describe a somewhat dark and depressive teenage / high-school sort of feeling.
Although many could easily relate with "When the day is long and the night, the night is yours alone". REM has hit the right string in describing that special "almost" depressing feeling. But as the song continues "Everybody hurts". The overall reaction you get is "woo, thanks god, I thought it was only me" : D
While those hungry for deep philosophical meanings won’t be too happy with "Everybody hurts" (go and listen to "Losing my Religion" if you want something like that), the music arrangement is instantly recognizable. It might be good to mention that string arrangement was made by John Paul Jones, a bassist from Led Zeppelin.
