Elvis Presley got it going on, Beatles introduced the band as a concept of stardom, Rolling Stones brought "bad boy" image to the scene and then along came the Doors who put the music as we know it upside down.
The Doors were the kind of band that shows up around the corner once and never gets recreated again.
In the era when songs were mostly written as a template on the rock, blues foundations, the Doors were something completely different.
Lyrics were almost cryptic in nature, making many fans lead lengthy debates over what was the original meaning.
Charismatic vocalist Jim Morrison was a very unpredictable and controversial figure at the time. His live performances usually relied heavily on improvisation and element of surprise.
The Doors had a specific way of writing songs, usually having the beat start softly with only a bass line and distinctive keyboards. Only to slowly build up to an emotional climax with loud drums and Jim screaming.
Doors were pushing the limits of an already stretched envelope of rock n roll. They soon became a band known for controversies and obscenities.
One such event took place on March 1, 1969 in Miami. During the concert Morrison went into something that many called hypnotic delusion caused by illegal substances. Instead of singing the songs he started ranting about unrelated topics, social situations, personal problems etc. At one point he allegedly exposed his genitals to the audience.
Their fourth "The Soft Parade" had more elements of pop music which caused some hardcore fans to distance themselves from the band.
The Doors career ended up in tragedy when vocalist Jim Morrison was found dead on July 3, 1971.
Although circumstances under which he died remained very controversial, the official cause of death is noted as heroine overdose.
He was buried in the Paris (France) cemetery.
The Doors remained together as a trio for two more years, but then officially disbanded in 1973.
It is interesting to note that Jim Morrison was 27 years old when he died. This was the exact age of some other notable rock stars who died young: Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain and Janis Joplin.
