U2 is a band that is not just one of the handful that survived the transition from 80’s into 90’s, but also a part of the privileged club which can still fill out big arena gigs.
Maybe only Rolling Stones and perhaps Bon Jovi is able to do so.
Since the formation U2 has never changed its line-up. US is Bono (vocals and rhythm guitar), The Edge (guitar, keyboards, and vocals), Adam Clayton (bass guitar), and Larry Mullen, Jr. (drums and percussion).
Ever since the initial formation U2 stayed true to its qualities – musical experimentation and different lyrical content. Today U2 is probably mostly known for its political stance which varies from moderate to radical, depending on the event.
We talk very often about transition from 80’s to 90’s and the difficulty that many rock bands had accommodating to the new emerging audience. U2 was no exception. Trying to keep up with "modern" times they started experimenting with dance music and various alternative rock styles. Although critics praised for being brave in doing so, fans didn’t react quite as good.
00’s brought back the original U2 sound which quickly returned them right to the top.
Band had an immeasurable success over the years. For example, they won 22 Grammy Award, got induced into rock n roll hall of fame and have sold over 140 million albums worldwide.
Members of the band, but especially charismatic vocalist Bono Vox, had engaged in numerous philanthropic and human rights causes.
The actual result of this activism is a subject of debate as many claim that such actions do not bring prosperity nor help third world countries. Critics also never fail to mention the luxurious properties Bono owns.
Despite positive and negative reactions, the fact is that U2 had brought attention to numerous issues mass media was reluctant to.
